Work Environment

At SRP, safety is a fundamental core value. We are committed to conducting business and operations with the highest regard for the safety of employees, contractors, customers and the public.

This is especially true with our skilled trades employees. From linemen and electricians to apprentices, tradeshelpers and warehouse workers, all SRP employees have a responsibility to be safety leaders. Our goal is to ensure that all employees go home safely each day. Our commitment is to work each day with a zero accident or incident mindset.

Apprenticeship & Training Programs

We have two rigorous, hands-on apprenticeship programs and ongoing training to keep our team at the top of their game and fluent in the best safety practices. It is physically and mentally challenging work with very tangible impacts on customers and the community. We rely on these employees’ experience, skill and total commitment to safety to deliver affordable and reliable water and power.

SRP has established two four-year apprenticeship programs that require at least 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 576 hours of related instruction. Both programs are registered and regulated by the Arizona Department of Economic Security’s Apprenticeship Office and the U.S. Department of Labor:

  1. Joint Apprenticeship Corporate Committee Program (JACC). Registered in 1947, this is one of Arizona’s oldest apprenticeship programs. The committee operates as a partnership between SRP and the IBEW Local 266 and oversees apprenticeships for 12 trades.
  2. Apprenticeship & Training Committee Program (ATC). This salaried program registered in 2006. This committee oversees two apprenticeship programs.

Between SRP and IBEW Local 266’s JACC and SRP’s ATC programs, 14 apprenticeships are offered for the following occupations:

  • Automobile Mechanic
  • Cable Splicer
  • Distribution System Operator
  • Electric Meter Installer
  • Electronics Technician
  • Industrial Coater
  • Industrial Maintenance Repairer
  • Line Installer Repairer
  • Machinist
  • Metal Fabricator
  • Plant Electrician
  • Plant Mechanic
  • Relay Technician
  • Substation Electrician

Throughout their four-year programs, apprentices are evaluated on a monthly basis to ensure adequate progress is being made. They attend after-hours related instruction classes and work to obtain the proper number of hours to complete their program on time. Each apprenticeship trade has a subcommittee made up of its journeyworkers and supervisor who help make decisions regarding the direction of their trade’s program and its apprentices.

At the conclusion of their program, apprentices graduate and become journeyworkers in their trade, an achievement that earns them certifications from the State of Arizona and U.S. Department of Labor.

SRP’s apprentices are full-time employees with full benefits. They begin their program earning close to full journeyworker wage and are eligible for progressions as they advance in their program.

Most importantly, our apprentices finish their programs doing work they can be proud of in a lucrative, meaningful trade.
