Summary

SRP Gila River Power Station (GRS) is acquiring a Mechanical Engineer Senior, 1, 2. Adding to the description below, mechanical engineer will be responsible for asset health assessment for plant equipment, project implementations and execution, forced and planned outage preparations, inspections and coordinating repairs, collaboration with other departments on studies and projects, and conducting root cause analysis. Performs activities related to site engineering in a technically sound, timely, cost-effective manner to enable SRP to provide cost efficient water and energy services. Primary work location will be at GRS in Gila Bend, Arizona. GRS is home to four combined cycle power blocks - SRP owns and operates blocks 1 and 4, and operates blocks 2 and 3 for the owner Tucson Electric Power (TEP). Each power block consists of two combustion turbines, two heat recovery steam generators and one steam turbine. They have a total capacity of 1,100 MW, while all four blocks combined have a total capacity of 2,200 MW.

What You'll Do

  • Responsible for tracking forced outages, loss of generation and conducting root cause analysis on the cause of failure. This includes any necessary reporting requirements, internal and external
  • Coordinates external contacts with engineering firms to discuss field changes and with manufacturer sales representatives, service personnel and vendors to discuss new or modifications to existing equipment, resolve problems and exchange information
  • Track and monitor overall plant performance including but not limited to the combustion and steam turbines and the HRSG. Identify, trend and analyze plant heat rate and efficiency. Recommend changes and enhancements in operations that optimizes reliability and performance. 
  • Develop, communicate, and perform work practices and procedures to keep site drawings and documentation up to date.
  • Analyze equipment failures, determine root causes, recommend and/or execute corrective action plans and impose cost effective solutions to prevent reoccurrence. 
  • Assists in the investigation of plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provide analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans
  • Administers Document Control to assure high quality documentation. Provides updates to the Plant Engineer library and files on facility change requests and modifications
  • Develop and administers contracts and work scopes to ensure maximum efficiency and safety in the use of plant and contractor personnel.
  • Perform reliability studies to ensure that the plant's availability and performance metrics are maximized.
  • Review plant design and generate recommendations to reduce the overall cost of operations
  • Manage capital improvement projects to ensure budgetary guidelines and contractual guarantees are met
  • Complete any Safety and Regulatory Compliance Programs
    • Performs field engineering work
    • Performs engineering analyses.
    • Design and/or codes computer programs.

What It Takes To Succeed

Responsible for project budgets and schedules. Occasional contacts with customers and outside agencies. Contacts with suppliers of equipment and services. Occasional travel to suppliers facilities, industry organizational functions and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP. Ability to use engineering tools required for the job (i.e., computer, test equipment, etc.).

Experience

Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.

Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor.  Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.

Education

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) or any state or internationally recognized PE registration.

Testing and Certifications

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
