Job Brief

Driller is required to operate a drill rig and all support equipment in the drilling and construction of large diameter wells under the supervision of the pump foreman.

Any one position may not include all duties nor do the example of duties include all tasks, which may be found in the position of this class.

Job Responsibilities

  • Moves and sets up drilling vehicles in the Salt River Valley and in other statewide locations.
  • Drills and constructs large diameter wells in compliance with Salt River Project's well specifications.
  • Operates all drilling and support equipment.
  • Performs occasional arc welding and oxygen-acetylene cutting.
  • Oversees job duties of driller's helpers.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing of drill rig and support equipment.
  • Keeps logs of formation materials, depths encountered, drill rates, mud viscosity, equipment condition and other records.
  • Operates well rig tractor when moving drilling equipment to a new location
  • Assembles and installs construction water pump.
  • Services and assembles well derrick.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Employee must work safely and efficiently in the performance of their job duties.  Must maintain effective working relationships with other employees, customers and the public.   Must have the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and have the ability to accurately and legibly complete applicable paper work.  May be required to work a reasonable amount of overtime.

Experience

Five years’ of well drilling experience with cable tool rig or equivalent.

Additional Information

Job requires ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.  Must be able to drill and construct large diameter wells in all types of weather and degrees of hazards.  Thorough knowledge of safety rules and procedures for well drilling work is required.  Mechanical aptitude is essential.  Subject to out-of-town work, call-outs and changing shifts.  Drilling is performed in the field at various locations which may require being transported by fixed-wing, rotor or other means of company approved transportation  Requires considerable physical exertion and dexterity to handle well-0drilling equipment, load trucks and use hand tools.  Requires climbing and ability to work in high places.  Must have an above average knowledge of modern well drilling and construction technology in both consolidated and unconsolidated formations.  Must be able to meet ADOT driver qualifications, attend Smith System of Driving and be certified as T.D. II-Combo.

Certifications or Testing Required

Truckdriver II-Combo certification required
Appropriate respirator medical certification, fit test and training required.
Certification in oxygen-acetylene cutting and burning required.
First Aid/CPR classroom training required.
