Job Brief

The electric industry is facing new challenges and opportunities as the penetration of new technologies and energy resources on the distribution and transmission system increases.  Utility companies must prepare and provide internal and external standards to ensure the integrity of the grid. This shift in the energy landscape, along with changes in customer expectations, long-term sustainability goals and evolving technology, requires a forward looking, safe and scalable approach to balance how we meet customer needs while maximizing system reliability, interconnectivity and interoperability using standards.   

 

The DER Standards Engineer is responsible for defining, developing and maintaining SRP’s engineering standards for the design, construction, and maintenance of distribution assets and leading projects and programs related to distribution standards—with an emphasis on DER and inverter-based resources such as solar, Microgrids, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Electric Vehicles (EVs).  As a senior technical member of the team, the individual in this role may also lead other standards related activities, including but not limited to, developing and maintaining standards compliance programs, tracking new technologies and determining impacts to the standards, developing new interconnection standards, and supporting other grid modernization initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Defines, develops, and maintains SRP’s engineering standards for the design, construction, and interconnection of distribution assets.
  • Reviews and responds to requests for changes to distribution interconnection standards and serves as a subject matter expert both internally and externally as a key point of contact for standards questions.  Provides the interpretation and practical application of standards and facilitates changes.
  • Plays a key role in integrating new technologies, equipment, and methodologies and determines impacts to the standards.
  • Leads projects and programs related to the standards and performs as an engineering lead on projects and programs of major scope and importance.
  • Engages in industry groups and conferences, technical committees, and standards organizations, to monitor new technology and ensure that SRP keeps pace with industry standards and best practices.
  • Provides engineering support for DER interconnections to SRP’s distribution system.  Leads, manages, administers, and reviews work performed by consultants and others.

Education

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or State Professional Engineering Registration.

Experience

Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.

Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor.  Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.

 

Prefer knowledge and experience with Distributed Energy Resources and/or Inverter-Based Resources, as well as distribution interconnection methods, major materials, design and construction standards and safety codes.  Knowledge of industry standards such as IEEE Std. 1547, UL Std. 1741 SA, and/or IEEE Std. P2800  is preferred.  Background in distribution and power delivery engineering (especially within the SRP power delivery system) and knowledge of distribution standards is preferred.

 

Additional Information

Responsible for project budgets and schedules. Occasional contacts with customers and outside agencies. Contacts with suppliers of equipment and services. Occasional travel to supplier’s facilities, industry organizational functions and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organization groups within SRP.

Certifications or Testing Required

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
