Job Brief

The successful candidate will advance SRP’s strategic direction and sustainability goals using the industries latest planning tools and techniques. As a member of the Distribution Planning team, the successful candidate will plan the distribution system to enable our customer’s choices of renewable technologies and electric transportation while maintaining grid integrity and reliability. The team is developing advanced planning techniques, using state of the art technology, to prepare SRP’s distribution system for increasing complexity, optimization of infrastructure, and greater customer diversity to meet their needs and expectations. We require individuals capable of transitioning seamlessly between independent analysis and collaborative assignments with other stakeholders. Candidates must possess a strong capability to adapt and frame solutions to complex issues, often with conflicting business drivers, and deliver superior insights that are concise, relevant, and timely.

Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on the planning and engineering of the distribution system for modernization, growth, electric vehicles (EV), distributed energy resources (DERs), aging infrastructure, automation and enhanced customer services
  • Act as a technical lead in the overall planning of SRP’s distribution system. This includes initiating stages of the planning process, reviewing and validating the results of analysis, authoring reports and presenting the outcome to stakeholders and executive management 
  • Utilizes distribution system modeling and analytics to plan for the customer’s adoption of technology while maintaining the integrity of the grid and then translating the results into distribution system plans, roadmaps, standards, and processes.
  • Provide thought leadership regarding the modernization of the electric grid and the relationship between the modern grid and the customers it serves. 
  • Leads research with universities and other research partners on technologies or processes that improve grid performance in a rapidly changing industry environment. Authors papers and presents findings internally to executives and at national industry conferences. 
  • Tracks latest industry developments on emerging technologies and processes related to grid modernization and provides strategic guidance to executive management on SRP's modernization efforts.
  • Performs as an engineering project manager on special projects/programs which are large or have many complex features.
  • Provides engineering discipline leadership when administering and reviewing work performed by consultants and others.
  • Serves on industry committees and task forces as a representative of SRP.
  • Active leadership role in promoting safety.
  • Oversees and guides the work of less senior staff. 
  • The job functions described above require an individual with a high level of technical expertise, the ability to evolve to a rapidly changing industry environment, a detailed knowledge of electric systems, and the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences including customers, management, legislators, industry experts and students. These job functions necessitate a combination of interpersonal skills, education and experience at the principal level.

10 years professional experience actively engaged in electric utility engineering practice.

Experience in the administration, implementation and management of research, development and demonstration programs and projects

Demonstration of the following knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding of SRP corporate operations and energy business.
  • Broad knowledge of technical and scientific principles and ability to use them to assess research needs.
  • Understanding of and ability to use research information management principles and techniques to facilitate technology transfer and utilization of research

Additional Information

Responsible for budgets, schedules and management of resources for major research projects and activities. Regular contacts with other utilities, external research organizations and outside agencies. Occasional travel for research review meetings and specialized training. Ability to work effectively with various organization groups within SRP and lead project teams. Provide technical counsel to SRP and outside groups on research issues of importance to SRP and the utility industry. Effective interpersonal skills to communicate research information and results to SRP staff, management and outside agencies and facilitate technology transfer.




I - Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum


1. Additional specialty training (MS Engineering, MBA, or 18 graduate level college semester hours from an accredited institution in an engineering related field)

 Additional specialty training (18 graduate level college semester hours from an accredited institution)
