Summary

The core responsibility of a Gas Trader is to manage the physical natural gas supplies required to fuel SRP’s 5GW of gas-fired power generation. A successful trader will achieve the core mission while optimizing gas transportation capacity and storage assets, reducing commodity price risk, and working closely with power traders. The ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced environment where short-term tactical decision and good communications are required.

 

  • Start-time is as early as 4:30am when on shift and weekend coverage is required and rotated among gas traders

What You'll Do

  • Responsible for implementing a $500M budget of commodity and gas transportation resources to meet SRP’s core mission of serving over 1M residential and industrial customers.
  • Trades natural gas to meet fuel requirements necessary to meet the demand of SRP’s customer base. Transacts in forward, day-ahead, and real-time markets, interacting with bilateral counterparties and electronic trading platforms. Products transacted include spot, forwards, index, and options.
  • Collaborate with power trading teams to develop daily scheduling strategies which will optimize transportation capacity while meeting retail and wholesale burn forecasts and maximizing flexibility in gas flows.
  • Mitigates impact of gas imbalances and critical pipeline conditions including OFOs/Penalty Alerts.
  • Achieves core goals while remaining in compliance with credit, term, and nominal transaction limits.
  • Negotiates long-term gas transportation and storage contracts. Occasional work with legal counsel on pipeline tariffs
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with industry counterparts, including suppliers and pipelines. Occasionally represents SRP at industry events including the pipeline segment, natural gas interest groups, and regulatory bodies.
  • Works with long-term planning groups to develop plans for gas transportation procurement and associated budget.
  • Expert knowledge of fundamental market information including pricing, production, storage, and pipeline network/conditions
  • Occasionally prepares presentations and meets with Executive Management with respect to gas strategies and results.
  • Works with settlement groups for after the fact payments and accounting.

What It Takes To Succeed

  • One-year of relevant work experience in gas or power trading is preferred
  • Desire to work in an analytical environment and make ongoing risk/reward decisions which can have financial and physical reliability impacts. Candidates should have experience utilizing various software packages including MS Office.

Education

Completion of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution that prepares the employee for the assignment.

 

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona. We are taking steps to protect the health and well-being of all team members, and by following a number of health and safety protocols, to reduce the risk of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
