Job Brief

We are looking for a hardworking individual to monitor electric power generation asset reliability utilizing Advanced Pattern Recognition Technology, as well as steer our Monitoring Center toward future capabilities, like advanced predictive, diagnostic, and prognostic technologies. 

Job Responsibilities

Job duties shall include, but are not limited to the following*:
•    Monitoring a subset of electric power generating assets of various types (coal, gas, combined-cycle, hydro)
•    Utilize Advanced Pattern Recognition (APR) Software to identify anomalies in real-time plant operating data.  Apply engineering knowledge and experiences to aid in the remote troubleshooting with plant personnel of the issues tied to these anomalies. 
•    Maintain, improve, and develop new predictive monitoring models within the APR Software.
•    Document identified issues and cost avoidances in an in-house issue tracking system.    
•    Participate in weekly calls to plants to discuss performance issues, prepare reports and brief plant personnel, department and executive management.
•    Collaborate with Research and Development Institutions including the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Arizona State University (ASU) and others to keep the monitoring center on the leading edge of predictive modeling technology advancements.  
•    Lead various Research and Development or Department Projects, as assigned.  
•    Monitor power plant heat rate and other thermal performance indicators.    
•    Perform deep analysis on operating datasets to help our plant customers identify, locate, and better visualize aspects of plant reliability and thermal performance.
•    Aid in programmatically automating manual processes within the monitoring center.  
•    Interact with the Performance Monitoring Center and the Asset Health Management System. 
•    Perform minor backend support of Monitoring Center Systems and databases, where applicable. 

*Training will be provided for performance monitoring software.

Required & Preferred Skills

Required Skills:
•    Possesses Advanced Skills in Microsoft Excel (including data visualization, custom calculations, and conditional formatting)
•    Familiarity with the operating principals around various types of power generation including gas, combined-cycle, coal, and hydro
•    Displays self-motivation or self-learn skills using available knowledge sources.
•    Possesses a working knowledge of and can operate Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

Preferred Skills:
•    Knowledge and experience in coding and scripting (Python, R, SAS, etc.)
•    Knowledge and experience in machine learning techniques and other predictive methods.
•    Knowledge and experience in creating both rule-based and intelligent reasoning diagnostics.  
•    Familiarity with the Rankine and Brayton Thermodynamic Cycles.
•    Strong Data Modeling, Trending, and Visualization Skills.
•    The ability to present data findings through presentations or reports in meaningful ways. 
•    OSIsoft Pi Products (Pi Vision, Asset Framework, AF analytics, Datalink, Pi Admin, AFSDK, Web API)
•    Possesses the ability to work effectively with various organizational groups within SRP.


Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or State Professional Engineering Registration.


Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.

Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor.  Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.

Additional Information

This position spends most working days located at a computer workstation within our Monitoring and Diagnostics (M&D) Center known as the Performance Monitoring Center (PMC).  The position makes occasional trips to SRP Generating Facilities and some industry conferences, where applicable and necessary.

Certifications or Testing Required

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
