Job Brief

Performs activities related to power plant chemistry, water treatment systems, and regulatory permits. Provides scientific and analytical services specific to chemical treatments used in power plant water systems.

 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Manages overall Plant Chemistry Programs for electric generating stations.
  • Performs sample collection, analysis, data reporting and trending that results in proper chemical protection of all water-touched surfaces per EPRI guidelines.
  • Performs activities that support compliance demonstrations with regulatory permits (AZPDES, APP and Title V permits) including sampling, analysis, QA/QC, reporting, and record keeping.
  • Monitors the performance of water treatment systems (including Clarifiers, Multi-Media Filters, Reverse Osmosis Systems, and Mixed-Resin Deionization Systems).
  • Maintains bulk chemical inventory and places orders as needed to support plant operations. 
  • Supports efforts related to competitive sourcing of chemical contracts.
  • Develops, evaluates, and implements chemical treatments that protect power plant assets.
  • Assists with special studies as required. 
  • Provides reports to plant management on important plant chemistry trends.
  • Participates in training programs and provides technical assistance to operations, engineering, and maintenance personnel.
  • Manages line-item chemical budget expenditures and provides multi-year cost projections for chemical expenditures.
  • Manages projects to maintain or upgrade systems and equipment associated with plant chemistry performance.
  • Serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Power Plant Chemistry by providing support and technical information to SRP's generating fleet as needed.
  • Provides 24-hour on-call coverage for chemical emergencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education

Minimum of 15 college credits (100+) from an accredited institution that prepares the employee for the assignment.

Experience

Over 1 years and up to and including 3 years of experience chemical laboratory experience is desired or two years experience in power plant work is also desired, but not required.

Additional Information

  • Must possess knowledge necessary to perform role functions including:
    • Determining correct chemical control ranges and chemical doses to maintain proper unit chemical control based upon EPRI guidelines.
    • Understanding the effect that water conditioning and chemical treatment has on safe and efficient operation of plant equipment.
    • Ensuring safe operation and control of all chemical feed systems including hazardous substances such as acids and chlorine.
    • Operating and controlling water treatment systems including softening, clarification, multi-media filtration, reverse osmosis, and demineralizers.
    • Troubleshooting and correcting contaminated or malfunctioning water systems.
    • Reading engineering drawings.
    • Understanding basic power plant practices and procedures.
    • Work environment is dynamic. Requires timely decision-making capabilities.
    • Extensive contact with plant operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, laboratory chemists, and chemical suppliers is required.
    • Work is completed on a 24/7 basis, 365 days per year. Chemical Specialist is expected to engage on off-hours as needed to ensure continued, reliable operation.
    • Appropriate respirator medical certification, fit testing, and training is required.

 

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 20 college chemistry credits (100+) from an accredited institution that prepares the employee for the assignment.

 

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of power plant chemistry or chemical laboratory experience.
