Job Brief

Seeking an experienced attorney to join SRP’s in-house legal team to provide legal guidance and advice to SRP client departments on water law and water rights that will shape strategic decision-making in the water and power industry.  The candidate’s knowledge of federal and state water laws and regulations will be key in shaping the company’s policies in light of evolving business needs and industry trends.  The candidate should have a demonstrated interest and deep desire to achieve excellence as a water lawyer and should be capable of producing high quality analysis on complex legal matters, with additional experience in negotiating and drafting complex agreements.  A demonstrated ability to (1) prioritize multiple matters and issues while keeping management informed of developments, (2) constructively contribute to high functioning teams of professionals, (3) develop collaborative relationships both internally and externally, particularly with federal, state and tribal government attorneys and other personnel, (4) research, problem solve, critically think, develop creative solutions to unique/difficult problems, and communicate results verbally and in writing.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide high quality legal advice to support SRP’s core water and power functions and protection of SRP’s shareholder water rights.
  • Teamwork:  Must function well in a team environment comprised of clients from various SRP departments, other in-house lawyers, outside counsel, government relations representatives, technical experts, paralegals and legal technicians, and exhibit appropriate professional deference to SRP decisionmakers.
  • Develop cooperative, productive, and effective working relationships with SRP client departments, SRP contracted expert and legal counsel, lawyers and executives representing third parties, regulatory agency officials, elected representatives and staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Research complex legal issues and draft written memoranda, summaries, agreements, and other legal materials.
  • Conduct complex negotiations to resolve water rights conflicts and draft term sheets and settlement agreements to memorialize the resolution. 
  • Conduct complex negotiations for use of reclamation project facilities and draft legal agreements to memorialize the terms.
  • Manage, coordinate, and support outside counsel with litigation related to water and power issues, including Arizona’s general stream adjudications.
  • Analyze federal and state legislation for impacts to SRP’s core business functions.
  • Prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently.
  • Organize and coordinate projects with minimal supervision.
  • Handle all duties with confidentiality, discretion and good judgment.

Education

Completion of a Juris Doctor (JD ) from an accredited institution.

Experience

Preferred that the candidate have five or more years of legal experience with solid performance advising clients on water law and water rights matters. 

Corporate Attorney or experience related to the assignment.

  • Candidate must be admitted to practice law in Arizona (or if admitted to practice out of state, the ability to attain Arizona State Bar admission within 18 months).

  • Ability to work independently with high self‐initiative in carrying out job responsibilities.
