Summary

This engineer position reports to SRP’s PAC Strategy department. The PAC Strategy department is responsible for technical standards and strategic activities of SRP’s Protection, Automation & Control (PAC) division; a multifaceted electrical engineering and technology services organization that designs, constructs, operates, and maintains SRP’s protection and control systems across generation, transmission, & distribution facilities.

 

This engineer position provides engineering services acting in a lead role in the research & development of new technologies, asset lifecycle planning, system modeling, compliance, standards development, and training. Particularly, this position will participate in the evaluation of new products, and leverage enabling technologies to enhance our protection and control standards. Provides project/program management for organizational projects/programs of major scope and importance with full technical and program responsibility. These functions are fulfilled in a technically sound, safe, timely, and cost effective manner to enable SRP to realize its goals and objectives for providing water and energy related services.

What You'll Do

  • Performs as an engineering project/program leader/engineer on projects/programs which are large or have many complex features.
  • Prepares specifications, evaluates bids, and prepares recommendation materials for management consideration when evaluating large or complex procurements.
  • Performs as a staff consultant and/or advisor in a technical specialty.
  • May performs engineering design, analysis, and studies in an area of technical specialty requiring a significant knowledge of related fields.
  • Provides engineering discipline leadership when administering and reviewing work performed by consultants and others.
  • May prepare and/or conduct written and oral reports and presentations.
  • When required/requested, serves on industry committees and task forces as a representative of SRP.
  • Active leadership role in promoting safety within department.
  • Actively develops and trains engineers on technical, project management, and/or best practices related activities. Identifies or creates development opportunities.
  • Establishes standards and facilitates Standards Change Processes in the discipline when required.
  • Leads collaboration across SRP.
  • Represents SRP in legal and regulatory matters or proceedings of technical nature when required.
  • Demonstrates substantive thought leadership to further new ideas, products, services, and/or business processes to increase efficiency, effectiveness, and/or customer satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates substantive leadership in organizational change management to foster the success of new business products, services, and/or business processes.
  • Performs as project/program leader/engineer on projects/programs of major scope and importance.
  • Plans and develops the scope, approval, and implementation of engineering projects which have an important effect on major programs of the organization.
  • Performs as a staff consultant and/or advisor with respect to a technical specialty in the application of advanced concepts, principles and processes.
  • Provides full technical leadership when administering and reviewing work performed by consultants, outside agencies, and others.
  • When required/requested, serves in a leadership role within external organizations and represents SRP’s position on issues of importance.
  • Company spokesperson in communicating technical subject matter to the public when required.
  • May make recommendations for facilities, personnel and funds required for programs which are directly related to the fulfillment of overall organizational goals and objectives.
  • Performs as a technical staff consultant and/or advisor with respect to a technical specialty in the application of advanced concepts, principles and processes. May be consulted extensively by associates and others with a high degree of reliance placed on the engineer’s interpretations and advice.

What You'll Do (continued)

•    When required/requested, serves in a leadership role within external organizations and is a recognized authority in area of specialization.
•    Defines strategic direction, opportunities and methods to ensure SRP’s vision is realized. Uses advanced knowledge of how the business works to achieve results
•    Take a leadership role in demonstrating working knowledge and understanding of Management of Change requirements and the necessary skills for implementation. Ensures all products created follows the requirements of the department.
•    Proficiency in protective relay coordination and settings calculations for protection systems
•    Utilize SRP’s 5400sq. ft. Technology Innovation Laboratory in the evaluation of new products to leverage enabling technologies that enhance our protection and control system standards (e.g., IEC 61850, Synchrophasors, server based control and protection, distributed generation, ADMS, etc.)
•    Experience with electrical system analysis software such as ASPEN, ETap, SKM, PSS/E and PSLF
•    Experience with field testing and commissioning of substation equipment
•    Substation integration/automation, SCADA, RTU, programming a plus

What It Takes To Succeed

If internal, Candidates must attain a Valued Contributor or better rating on their annual performance review for the last three years.

 

Responsible for budgets, schedules, and management of resources for programs and projects of major scope. Demonstrated network of internal and external contacts including customers, outside agencies, and suppliers of significant equipment and services. Occasional travel to suppliers' facilities, industry functions, and SRP facilities. Ability to work effectively with various organizations within SRP. Ability to use engineering tools required for the job. Must have a valid driver's license.

Ability to work effectively with SRP executive management.

 

EDUCATION

Completion of a bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution or ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA).


AND


1) Additional specialty training (MS Engineering, MBA, or 36 graduate level college semester hours)

 

OR


2) Any state or internationally recognized Professional Engineering registration by the International Professional Engineers Agreement. plus additional specialty training (MS Engineering, MBA, or 18 graduate level college semester hours).

Experience

  • 14 years professional experience actively engaged in engineering plus professional recognition.
  • Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work as defined for this position.
  • Authored internal and/or external technical papers

Testing and Certifications

Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.

 

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
