Summary
The Analyst Financial Risk Management Principal role is the technical expert and advisor within the Energy Risk Management group, focusing on advanced risk modeling, risk systems development, and serves as the principal SME on commodity-related financial risk within the broader Financial Services group. In addition, this role will serve to guide Energy Risk Management’s Markets+ implementation and participation. This role combines deep financial analysis with commodity/market expertise to assess, forecast, and advise on the financial impacts of market operations, trading strategies, and evolving risk exposures. This role is responsible for monitoring and analyzing the organization’s market risk exposure for commodities, ensuring alignment with trading limits and risk control policies. This role partners closely with Supply & Trading, Resource Planning, Treasury, Accounting, Financial Planning, and Regulatory Affairs to provide strategic financial and risk acumen for strategic decision making and ensure transparency, compliance, and financial integrity across all market-related activities.
What You'll Do
• Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) to support the Company’s short and mid-term financial risk forecasting by performing qualitative and quantitative analyses to drive decision-making, support corporate initiatives and resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.
• Contributes to or leads the delivery of recommendations resulting from financial and risk analyses. Anticipates and identifies areas of opportunity or inherent business risks evident in the data and communicates action plans to stakeholders.
• Leads the development of interdepartmental consensus on analytical assumptions and approaches leveraged for financial planning purposes. Key areas of focus include financial modeling, variance analysis and senior leadership reporting.
• Prepares and presents financial reports to senior leadership, including financial management committees, Executives, and Board and Council.
• Provides technical expertise and leadership during Markets+ implementation, including readiness assessments, financial settlements, and performance metrics
• Develops and maintains comprehensive financial models to assess various scenarios and support corporate initiatives. Models exposure across SRP’s commodity portfolio, including natural gas, power, emissions, and other energy-related assets, and value derivative positions for internal and external reporting.
• Aligns financial forecasts with physical positions and load forecasts in partnership with resource planning and operations. Prepare monthly position and risk reports for executive management and analyze settlement results, variance reports, and forecast-to-actuals to identify financial drivers and trends.
• Continually improves forecast integrity by utilizing internal and external information resources, researching new financial metrics and modeling techniques, benchmarking, and data analytics.
• Promotes best practices of modeling techniques, methodologies, controls and documentation.
• Mentors and coaches junior team members, including supporting their technical and professional development. Provides input on success metrics for the team.
• Handles other projects and duties as assigned.
What It Takes To Succeed
• Master’s degree in Finance, Economics, or Business Administration.
Previous experience in financial planning and analysis, energy trading support, or risk management within a utility or ISO/RTO environment is preferred.
• Experience with Markets+, SPP, CAISO, or other organized market structures is preferred.
• Excellent communication, writing and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex financial concepts and interface effectively with all levels of management and staff.
• Ability to work effectively without direct supervision in a fast paced, stressful, and multitasking environment.
• Strong understanding of wholesale power markets, market settlements, and transmission cost structures.
• Advanced financial modeling and data analysis skills using Excel, SQL, Power BI, and data visualization tools.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
• Demonstrated ability to organize a diverse workload, work independently, and complete work accurately and within deadlines
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite including advanced Excel and PowerPoint
Experience
• Minimum 10 years of relevant experience required.
Education
Hybrid Workplace
SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
