Summary

Responsible for the leadership and direction within SRP’s Fleet Engineering department that includes engineering oversight and asset management for a large and diversified utility fleet. (2,500 total assets, 1850 rolling vehicles) Collaborates with SRP’s lines of business for the planning and execution of vehicle and equipment needs. Manages the building and construction of all prototype and replacement vehicles and parts; approves all business plans and engineering projects including designs and specifications; and reviews all capabilities, resources, assessments, and testing of vehicle/parts from manufacturers and vendors. This position will have significant interaction with suppliers, vendors, SRP Executive Leadership, business unit customers, shop supervisors and other Fleet Services staff.  Will also work closely with Senior Manager of Fleet Services.  

What You'll Do

  • Manages, coaches and develops a highly specialized staff of engineers, fleet professionals and an operations team. Leads the department establishing the mission, vision, goals, and objectives. Ensures all personnel complete annual mandated and required training. 
  • Manage innovation and continuous improvement for Transportation operations team. 
  • Works with the key vendors to maintain a professional relationship that facilitates cost and service in the best interest of the company. Monitor market activities including supplier changes, program innovations and new services. 
  • Manages the building and construction of all prototype and replacement vehicles and parts; approves all business plans and engineering projects including designs and specifications; oversees and reviews all capabilities, resources, assessments, and testing of vehicle/parts from manufacturers and vendors. 
  • Coordinates the production cycle of new vehicles and parts including planning, engineering, construction, finished product, quality assurance, and final delivery. 
  • Partners with fleet management, business partners, executives, and other leaders to ensure client and vendor' needs are thoroughly addressed and resolved and collaborates with all fleet engineering personnel, garage personnel, and vendors to resolve escalated issues. 
  • Develops and adheres to a capital and/or leasing strategy that includes budgetary responsibility. This includes strategic planning to maintain cost efficient practices and ensure cost effective operations and expenditure approvals for all new vehicle/parts projects, acquisitions, and replacements with both a capital and leasing strategy. Reviews and approves analysis and reports on financial and operating metrics. 
  • Promotes and fosters company safety, wellness, and accident prevention programs. 
  • Assist the Engineering team to specify and procure approval vehicle in the annual budget 
  • Ensures fleet compliance with all relevant safety and environmental regulations (State and Federal regulations  
  • Supports corporate sustainability goals for fleet carbon reduction
  • Provide strategic direction and support for Transportation Operations with oversight of technology integration which includes the fleet work management system, fuel system, telematics, motor pool, and analytics. 

What It Takes To Succeed

Prior management and/or supervisory experience.  

Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills. 

Ability to develop and implement effective strategies for fleet optimization. 

Knowledge and experience with transportation fleet operations and engineering services  

Management and team building skills, including supervisory, instruction, problem analysis and decision making, planning and organizing, adaptability/flexibility, stress tolerance and time management. 

Utility, vehicle or construction industry experience desired 

Union environment experience desired 

Prior experience in managing budgets of $5 million or more desired. 

Experience

A minimum of eight years of related experience is required (if no degree, 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and related experience totaling 12 years). 

Education

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum, an International Engineering Alliance (IEA) recognized institution, ABET Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) or any state or internationally recognized PE registration.

Testing and Certifications

  • Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license within 4 months of starting the position 

  • Preferred: CAFS (Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist) or CAFM (Certified Automotive Fleet Manager) 

 

Hybrid Workplace

SRP currently offers a hybrid workplace, which allows employees whose jobs can be performed remotely, and who have sufficient technical capability, to telework up to three days per week. Although teleworking is available, all employees must live and work in Arizona.
